La collection du jardinier
Work in progress
La collection du jardinier (the gardener’s collection) is the result of the collection and gleaning of the fallen plants left alongside roads, houses and fields in Métis. They proceed by first keenly observing the shapes and colours of the native plants that have appeared by accident (the opposite of gardening). Here weeds have become curiosities. And the garden has become a collection – a three-dimensional herbarium that has been arranged in such as way so that the specimens reveal their beauty and their delicacy.
This collection, assembled by les attentives, seeks to take form in the heart of Elsie Reford’s historic gardens. Les attentives will draw on the daily gathering of deadheaded blossoms and leaves by the gardens’ gardeners that is normally destined for composting. So they invite visitors to take part in a discovery trail, to follow a pathway that includes the Estevan Lodge (dark room), into the historic gardens (gardener’s shed) and to the Festival site (small greenhouse). Les attentives will be back in Métis between August 1 and August 19 to continue the work and enrich the collection.
